Running Through History: The Koh Ker Camping Team at the 3rd Koh Ker Marathon!

When the Koh Ker Camping Team Takes the Start Line: Highlights from the 3rd Koh Ker Run!

Running shoes laced, spirits high, and big smiles all around! This weekend, the Koh Ker Camping staff traded their front-desk duties and campsite tools for running gear. Our team laced up to join the 3rd edition of the Koh Ker Marathon, proudly taking on the signature 7 km route.

Why Does the Koh Ker Marathon Take Place?

Beyond being a fantastic athletic challenge, the Koh Ker running event carries a deep community purpose. Organized to celebrate and honor the area’s recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the event aims to:

  • Raise Awareness for Heritage Preservation: Connecting participants directly with Khmer history to inspire collective care for these sacred ruins.
  • Promote Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Tourism: Showcasing Koh Ker’s unspoiled countryside while generating positive economic impact for local residents.
  • Unite the Local Community: Bringing together villagers, runners, travel enthusiasts, and local businesses in a vibrant spirit of celebration.

Running Through an Ancient Khmer Empire

Stepping onto the 7 km trail at Koh Ker feels like running through the pages of a history book. Koh Ker served as the capital of the Khmer Empire in the 10th century during the reign of King Jayavarman IV. The archaeological site is famous for its majestic 7-tiered pyramid temple, Prasat Prang (Prasat Thom), as well as sanctuary ruins wrapped in giant tree roots.

Gliding past ancient sandstone structures under the morning jungle canopy provided all the energy our team needed from the start line to the finish line!

Team Spirit on the Trail

At Koh Ker Camping, our daily work is driven by community connection, environmental respect, and teamwork. Joining this race was a natural choice for us to live out those values firsthand, support our community, and push our limits together.

After crossing the finish line together, our team is back at campβ€”a little tired in the legs, but fully recharged in spirit and ready to welcome you with fresh stories and warm hospitality!

A huge thank you to the organizers of the 3rd edition and to everyone who cheered on the runners. See you on the start line next year!
