Prasat Pram: The Enchanting Temple Embraced by Nature in Koh Ker

Among all the sanctuaries hidden within the forests of Koh Ker, one site instantly captures the imagination of travelers: Prasat Pram (literally “The Temple of Five”). Famous for its ancient brick towers draped in the massive root systems of banyan and strangler fig trees, this temple offers one of the most stunning examples of nature reclaiming stone.

The Architecture of the Five Towers

Built in the 10th century during the reign of King Jayavarman IV, Prasat Pram takes its modern name from the five towers (Pram meaning “five” in Khmer) that form the sanctuary:

  • Three main eastern towers: Constructed to house major Hindu deities, including Lord Shiva.
  • Two annex structures (“Libraries”): Positioned in front of the main towers, built from red brick and sandstone.

When Nature Becomes the Sculptor

What makes Prasat Pram a favorite for photographers and heritage enthusiasts is its dramatic botanical embrace.

Much like the famous Ta Prohm in the main Angkor park, one of Prasat Pram’s brick library towers is almost entirely encased in a curtain of massive tree roots. Over centuries, these roots have slithered between the ancient bricks, holding the structure upright while giving it a timeless, fairytale appearance.

In the early morning, as sunlight filters through the forest canopy to illuminate the contrast between red brick and green moss, the atmosphere feels truly magical.

A Must-See Stop on Your Koh Ker Journey

Located right at the entrance of the main archaeological loop, Prasat Pram is often the first sanctuary visitors encounter. Easily accessible for guests staying at Koh Ker Camping, it serves as the perfect introduction to the site’s rich history before heading deeper toward the grand pyramid of Prasat Thom.
